World Lacks Enough Food, Fuel as Population Soars

The world is running out of time to make sure there is enough food, water and energy to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population and to avoid sending up to 3 billion people into poverty, a U.N. report warned. As the world's population looks set to grow to nearly 9 billion by 2040 from 7 billion now, and the number of middle-class consumers increases by 3 billion over the next 20 years, the demand for resources will rise exponentially.

These social media-driven initiatives are naturally intended to build greater awareness of the brand’s own social responsibility positioning, and, according to a global study from The Netherlands Organization, social media can also help build a more sustainable society.

Do you have the winter blues? Next time you plan a tropical vacation, consider making it an eco-friendly one. Although many hotels and tour companies call themselves “green,” many of them just say that to lure environmentally minded clients. Thankfully, the Hawai'i Ecotourism Association has started certifying tour operators through a program designed to educate them on "the responsible use of natural and cultural resources"—and to raise visitors' awareness as well.
